The age old debate lingers on, do we really need faster RAM? is it beneficial? We’ve made our feelings clear in the past and the short answer is yes, it helps. With speeds of 3000Mhz, how does this particular kit perform?
[Packaging and First Look]
Packaging is a simple affair, as with most RAM. Crucial ship their modules in a plastic hardcover BUT… unlike some other brands, you do not require an arsenal of tools, a first aid kit on standby, or life insurance policy to open the package.! Capacity and speeds are listed clearly on the front
Crucial is smart and eco-friendly, they actually use the same insert for all their current products. Credit to them avoiding unnecessary printing and potential waste!
The design is really nice on the eye. A solid aluminum heatsink wraps around the PCB; each side has lots of ridges, slanted elements, and accents. All combined produce one slick product!
A black PCB and gunmetal top is a smart choice and will look great in ANY colored motherboard. At 37MM the modules aren’t’ strictly low profile, due to the additional bar that runs along the top of the heat spreader. An interesting design twist here is that, either side of the spreaders don’t make contact with each other, and this may help with heat dissipation.
Anyhow, back on point In 2017 we don’t worry about CPU cooler clearance as much now, but if your using old kit, please do measure before purchase.
Those pesky stickers we see often, indicate the XMP profile runs at 15-16-16-35-2T, and a requires a voltage of 1.35V.

Overclocking is often dubbed as the silicone lottery. You should keep in mind, each user experience will differ. What we present is the best we achieved with our setup. We only provide 100% stable results, we may mention potential overclocks, but only include data from stable runs. A system must be pass extreme torture testing from Gaming, Benchmarks and stress tools to be deemed stable.
We’ll put the modules to test, with various applications. Starting with a quick look at the maximum overclock. The 3000Mhz XMP has timings of 15-16-16-35-2T
With some playing around in the BIOS, we hit a limit of 3200Mhz. However, would couldn’t complete our entire stress testing suite, so its a fail.
Each kit will vary and if you’re willing to slacken the timings and experiment, you may achieve better!
A recent test we’ve added in the mix. While the differences don’t look significant at first glance. This system intensive test, does benefit from faster RAM. This particular kit has tighter timings than the other 3000Mhz kit we’ve seen and bettered them.

The kit sits nicely between the two 3000/3200 hyperX kits. Impressive

It uses current technologies like sse, mmx, scheduled threading and further techniques, including an accurate time measurement that provide reliable consistent results. All this will precisely reflect the performance of your system. Every little change done on the benched system will take place on the received results. Furthermore MaxxPI² will provide all users easy comparison with other machines. Save, view and work with own results.
Solid results with MAXMEM
We’ll start with a look at 3D mark, granted not a game but a favorite application, and it will be interesting to see the gains, found from faster kits.
While not strictly a game, an interesting test that shows its not always the raw speed that matters, as tighter timings can play a vital role too.
Our testing shows that some games will benefit with faster RAM
Let us jump into performance first, the Crucial Ballistix Tactical for sure looks the part, but performance was excellent too. Those tighter timings play their role, and deliver the best scores for a 3000Mhz kit, we’ve seen to date. Do remember running at 3000Mhz and above is a strain on older Kit. You ought to use X99/Z170 as a minimum, but Z270 would be a better choice.
The main appeal for me is the sleek design. While this product is not technically low profile, They will offer fair compatibility and look great even in smaller builds. The silver might seem like an odd choice, with the majority of hardware now gearing toward blacks with RGB. I’d say they are still worth considering. Yes, there are flashier and faster frequency kits out there, but this one is well worth considering for its looks alone, and above all, the above average performance!
